Want a position in the sport and recreation industry?

The philosophy of the Sports Development Academy is to promote the mental, spiritual, social and physical development of its students.  The Academy places emphasis on every student achieving excellence in an environment that they are comfortable in, but one that will also challenge them. 

Areas include Coaching, Confidence-Building, Goal Setting, Fitness, First Aid, Nutrition, and Sports Management.  A variety of sports and activities are covered throughout the year and may change annually depending on the interest of the students in the Academy.  These may include but are not limited to Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Korfball, Netball, Volleyball, Squash, Tennis, Table Tennis, Touch, Acrobats, Boxing, Dance, Mountain-biking, Self-Defence, Boating, Kayaking, Life-Saving, Swimming, and Windsurfing.

What will this course be about?

This course is designed to challenge participants, encourage personal growth and develop physical fitness. The course aims to develop the skills sought by employers such as personal well being and confidence; problem solving and decision making skills; written and oral communication; co-operative learning; leadership development; group analysis and team work. We aim to give students a clear direction in a fun environment. The course will provide opportunities to learn and develop in a variety of different recreational and leisure activities.

What qualification does this count towards?
  • Aoraki Polytechnic foundation credits

  • NZQA Unit Standards and Achievement Standards Levels 1, 2, and 3

  • Aranui Academy Graduation Certificate

Obtained course director approval to enter Academy programme.

Tania Hoffman

Tania Hoffman: Director of the Sports Development Academy

Director of the Sports Development Academy, Tania Hoffman, has a comprehensive background in sport with the main focus in netball and volleyball.  She has represented Canterbury in age group netball and was a stalwart of premier club netball for many years.  Tania has been involved with coaching age-group and senior representative teams for many years in Canterbury.  She has also been involved in selecting Canterbury NPC and franchise teams.  Tania is currently the Canterbury NPC coach.
